Street violence, safety and dealing with the police
March 26, 2011 7:30 - 9:00pm @ Milwaukee LGBT Community Center
Street violence, safety and dealing with the police
Guest speaker: Attorney Laura Sette
Description: Anti-transgender violence -- occurring on the street, at home, at work, or anywhere else -- is more prevalent than most of us like to acknowledge. We will briefly address general street safety for trans+ and SOFFA individuals (always keeping in mind that our actions are not to blame for the friction or fists initiated by others). Attorney Laura Sette will then address the challenges of if, when and how to involve the police in anti-transgender violence, recognizing that the police may be less than helpful (at best) or part of the problem (at worst). Ample time for questions and answers will allow for discussion about specific concerns and challenges.
Location: Milwaukee LGBT Community Center, 252 E. Highland Ave, Milwaukee, WI

| Open Discussion | |
March 26, 2011 6:00 - 7:10pm
Do you crave connection with fellow Trans+ and SOFFA individuals? This gently facilitated time is especially devoted to exploring the issues you bring in - sharing your experiences and stories, asking questions, seeking referrals, gathering resources. We'll assure this hour+ will stay focused on your needs, and the discussion you generate.

| Underemployed? Like some help finding work? | |
Harassment. > Discrimination. > Hostile work environments. > Unequal expectations. > Intervention. > Teamwork. > Dependable income. > Stable employment. > New career.
Are you currently employed, but not working at a job you love? Are you recently unemployed and needing to get back into the workforce? Have you recently transitioned and need some support re-establishing your work history in your new name and gender? FORGE, in partnership with the Milwaukee LGBT Community Center, Diverse & Resilient/SHEBA, Q-BLOK, and a large Milwaukee-headquartered employment agency have designed a pilot project to help transgender folks gain more satisfying and enriching employment. FORGE is pre-screening applicants to be entered into this special program. Applicants will have access to not-usually-offered services by the employment agency, including: - a "personal branding" workshop - helping you get an edge and identify your unique personal marketable qualities
- one-on-one resume writing support - designed to create a resume that shines and grabs employers' attention
- dynamic interview practice and skills-building -- to increase your success in today's challenging employment market
- pairing with a mentor from the employment agency -- someone who can help you navigate the system, support you with questions, and encourage your success
The first "round" of the pilot project, with the above components, will begin April 5, 2011, so apply today!

Birth Certificate Lawsuits Filed
They won't affect Wisconsinites directly, but the Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund (TLDEF) has filed three lawsuits alleging that New York City has violated its own Human Rights Law by requiring certain surgeries before they will issue corrected birth certificates to transgender people. You can find out more at about these lawsuits at http://www.transgenderlegal.org or read an article posted on grayprideparade.com at http://www.grayprideparade.com/2011/03/22/lawsuits-filed-to-change-birth-certificate-rules/
